Ask for detailsIELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most widely accepted English language proficiency exam. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge Assessment. There are two versions: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The Academic version is used for university applications, while General Training is for immigration and employment purposes.
The exam consists of four sections: Listening (40 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11-14 minutes). Each section is scored from 0 to 9, and the overall band score is the average of all four sections. The majority of universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Europe require IELTS scores. Typically, undergraduate programs require Band 6.0-6.5, while postgraduate programs require Band 6.5-7.0.
At TestPrep, we offer specialized programs for both IELTS Academic and General Training. Our students achieve an average band improvement of 1.5 points. We focus especially on Speaking and Writing — the sections that students find most challenging — through intensive one-on-one practice to ensure rapid skill development.
The IELTS Speaking section is a live interview with an examiner and consists of three parts: Part 1, Part 2 (Cue Card) and Part 3. It is assessed on four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Our tutors systematically develop all four criteria through one-on-one speaking practice in every session.
The Writing section includes Task 1 (describing a graph/table or writing a letter) and Task 2 (essay). Each week you write at least 2 Task 1 and 2 Task 2 essays and receive detailed written feedback from your tutor. Band improvement focuses on task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Our experienced tutors evaluate every essay you write using authentic IELTS examiner criteria.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is administered by British Council, IDP, and Cambridge. It is the primary English-language reference for the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and most European universities, as well as visa applications. It is offered in Academic and General Training versions.
Each section is scored on a 0-9 band, and the Overall Band is the average to the nearest half-band. Leading UK universities expect 6.5-7.5 overall (with 6.0-7.0 minimums per section).
Academic is for university applications; Reading and Writing use academic content. General Training is for migration and work; it uses everyday texts and a letter task. Speaking and Listening are the same in both versions.
Total 2 hours 45 minutes: Listening 30 min, Reading 60 min, Writing 60 min. Speaking is a separate 11-14 minute session (same or another day). Paper-based and computer-delivered options are available.
Paper-based results are released within 13 days; computer-delivered within 3-5 days. IELTS Online is also available where eligible, taken via home setup.
Four sections; Speaking is in a separate session, the rest in one sitting.
4 sections, 40 questions
3 passages, 40 questions (Academic or GT)
Task 1 (report/letter) + Task 2 (essay)
3 parts: introduction, monologue, discussion
Speaking is delivered with a trained examiner, at a test center or by video.
Typical ceiling for the most selective UK programs (Cambridge, Oxford, LSE).
Common cutoff for medicine, law, and Master's programs.
Minimum for most undergraduate applications, often with 6.0+ per section.
Acceptance band for foundation/pre-sessional programs.
For Band 7.0+, Writing and Speaking require 7.0+ across all four criteria (Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range, and Task Achievement/Response).
