2026 TOEFL iBT New Format and Preparation
TOEFL iBT underwent a major overhaul starting January 21, 2026. The new format is shorter (67-85 minutes), more adaptive, and measures daily English skills alongside academic ones. Reading and Listening sections are now adaptive, meaning difficulty adjusts based on your performance.
The biggest change is in Writing: the old Integrated Writing is gone, replaced by Write an Email (7 min), Build a Sentence, and Academic Discussion tasks. Speaking now includes Listen and Repeat plus Interview format - no preparation time, you must respond in 45 seconds.
Scoring has also changed: each section is scored 1.0-6.0 in 0.5 increments (similar to IELTS). Until 2028, the old 0-120 scale is also reported for transition. At TestPrep, we prepare students for the new format with fully updated programs.

What is TOEFL and where is it accepted?
TOEFL iBT is the academic English proficiency test administered by ETS. It is accepted by virtually all US universities, plus institutions in Canada, Europe, and Turkey's English-medium universities. It measures four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing.
How is TOEFL scored?
Each section is scored 0-30, with a total range of 0-120. Top-50 US universities typically expect 100+, the Ivy League prefers 105-110+, and most English-medium programs in Turkey set thresholds between 78-95.
How long is the test?
The new format (2023+) runs about 2 hours: Reading 35 min, Listening 36 min, Speaking 16 min, Writing 29 min. There are no breaks. The exam can be taken at a test centre or as the Home Edition.
How often can I take TOEFL?
Unlimited attempts, with a 3-day gap between any two sittings. Most universities accept the highest single score or MyBest Scores (which combines the highest section scores from the last two years).
Which section is hardest?
For most students Speaking is the toughest because you must begin within 15-30 seconds and speak for 45-60 seconds. Writing's integrated task (read + listen + write) also takes practice to master.
