What You Need to Know About TOEFL iBT

Detailed Information

2026 TOEFL iBT New Format and Preparation

TOEFL iBT underwent a major overhaul starting January 21, 2026. The new format is shorter (67-85 minutes), more adaptive, and measures everyday English alongside academic skills. Reading and Listening sections are now adaptive, meaning difficulty adjusts based on your performance.

The biggest change is in Writing: the old Integrated Writing is gone, replaced by Write an Email (7 min), Build a Sentence, and Academic Discussion tasks. Speaking now includes Listen and Repeat plus an Interview format: there is no preparation time, and you must respond in 45 seconds.

Scoring has also changed: each section is scored 1.0-6.0 in 0.5 increments (similar to IELTS). Until 2028, the old 0-120 scale is also reported during the transition. At TestPrep, we prepare students for the new format with fully updated programs.

Quick Answers

What is TOEFL and where is it accepted?

TOEFL iBT is the academic English proficiency test administered by ETS. It is accepted by virtually all US universities, plus institutions in Canada, Europe, and Türkiye's English-medium universities. It measures four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing.

How is TOEFL scored?

As of January 21, 2026, each section and the overall score are reported on a 1-6 band scale (0.5 increments); the overall score is the average of the four sections. For two years after January 2026, score reports also include a comparable score on the old 0-120 scale.

How long is the test?

The 2026 format runs about 2 hours: Reading 30 min (50 items), Listening 29 min (47 items), Writing 23 min (12 tasks), Speaking 8 min (11 tasks). Because Reading and Listening are adaptive, timing and item counts can vary slightly. Available at test centers and as the Home Edition.

How often can I take TOEFL?

Unlimited attempts, with a 3-day gap between any two sittings. Most universities accept the highest single score or MyBest Scores (which combines the highest section scores from the last two years).

Which section is hardest?

For most students Speaking is the toughest — the new "Take an Interview" task requires spontaneous responses. In Writing, the "Write an Email" and "Write for an Academic Discussion" tasks reward format familiarity.

TOEFL iBT structure (post-January 21, 2026)

Four sections, all on computer, in a single sitting of about 2 hours. Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive.

50 items: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage

Listening

Writing

·
Band 1-6

12 tasks: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion

Speaking

·

·
Band 1-6

11 tasks: Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview

The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. Because the test adapts, timing and item counts can vary slightly.

TOEFL score bands (1-6 scale)

5.5-6.0 — Top tier

Strong band for the Ivy League and top-20 US universities (roughly 110+ on the old scale).

5.0 — Excellent

Typical threshold for top-50 US universities and selective UK/Canada programs (old ~100).

4.0-4.5 — Competitive

Acceptance band for most universities (old ~80-95); the common range for English-medium programs in Türkiye.

3.5 and below — Borderline

May suffice for some universities but not for scholarships and top programs.

Equivalences are approximate; for two years after January 2026 score reports also include a comparable 0-120 score. Verify each university's current thresholds.

During the intensive review, we returned to real gaps instead of restarting everything. Over time, Integrated Tasks became one of the most organized parts of my TOEFL iBT preparation. I became much more comfortable asking questions in class. Thank you to my tutor and the TestPrep team.

MR

Maja Richter

We noticed that the resources kept changing during independent study. The tutor supported regular study, not only the lesson content.

SO

Saki Ota

We reduced the memorized phrases so my answers sounded more natural. It was an intense period, but it was worth it.

SS

Sameer Sharma

The feedback I received on Integrated Tasks was clear and practical. My tutor usually asked me to explain my thinking before stepping in. I learned not to lose the rest of a listening task because I missed one word. I wasn't trying to learn new topics at the very last minute. I went into the exam much calmer than I would have before. A big thank you to my tutor for all the support :)

GF

Ginevra Ferri

I had been studying alone, but my results stopped improving after a point. The preparation felt calmer than I expected.

EA

Elena Amato

Our child wasn't sure how to organize the preparation for TOEFL iBT. Online lessons made it possible to continue without losing time on travel. The lessons started being followed without constant reminders from us. The tutor's close attention to weaker areas gave us confidence. We were able to follow the mock results regularly. We were pleased with the support we received.
