A-Level Exams and UK University Entry

A-Levels (Advanced Levels) are advanced qualifications for students aged 16-18 and one of the cornerstones of the UK education system. They are run by two main exam boards: Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel (Pearson). Students typically choose 3-4 subjects graded A*-E. A* and A grades are required for entry to the UK's Russell Group universities and the world's most prestigious schools.

A-Level results are used directly for UK university applications through UCAS. Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, LSE, UCL, and Edinburgh consider A-Level grades the primary admission criterion. Canadian, Australian, Hong Kong, and Singapore universities also accept A-Level results.

What is A-Level?

A-Level is the post-16 university-entry qualification used in England and Wales. Students typically take 3-4 subjects, each graded A*-E. Top universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, LSE and Imperial accept A-Levels for direct entry.

How many A-Level subjects should I take?

Three A-Levels is the standard for UK admissions; Oxbridge and medicine/engineering applicants often add Further Mathematics as a fourth. English-medium programs in Türkiye also accept three A-Levels as a recognized standard.

What are AS and A2?

In the reformed (linear) UK system, A-Level is a single two-year qualification; AS exists as a standalone certificate but does not contribute to the final A-Level grade. In the modular Cambridge International system, AS makes up 50% of the A-Level total.

How do I get an A*?

Cambridge International A-Level usually requires ~90% and a strong AS-A2 balance for an A*. Reformed UK A-Levels grade A* on top-end papers (typically ~80%+); the threshold varies by subject and board (Edexcel/AQA/CIE).

Which A-Level boards do you support?

Most international schools in Türkiye use Cambridge International (CAIE); some use Edexcel International A-Level (Pearson). We work with both, using the matching syllabus, past papers and mark schemes.
