Detailed Information

What You Need to Know About IB Diploma

01

What Is the IB Diploma Programme?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a prestigious international education program designed for students aged 16-19 and offered in over 5,000 schools worldwide. The program consists of six subject groups plus three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Total score is calculated out of 45: 6 subjects x 7 points + TOK/EE bonus (0-3 points).

The IB Diploma is accepted and valued by the world's most selective universities. Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, and similar institutions evaluate the IB diploma at the highest standards. HL scores of 6 and 7 can provide course credit at many universities.

TestPrep has been supporting IB students since 2008, and our students' average IB score is 37/45. The most challenging aspect of the IB is managing six subjects alongside TOK, EE, and CAS simultaneously. Our experienced Examiner faculty provides comprehensive support across all components.

Quick Answers

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year international qualification for students aged 16-19. Candidates take six subjects (one from each of six groups) plus three core components: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Universities in the US, UK, Türkiye and worldwide accept the IB Diploma as a direct entry route.

How is the IB scored?

Each of the six subjects is graded 1-7 (max 42 points). Up to 3 additional points come from a TOK + Extended Essay matrix, giving a maximum of 45. The minimum for a diploma is 24 points plus completion of TOK, EE and CAS.

What is the difference between HL and SL?

Higher Level (HL) subjects are taught for ~240 hours and Standard Level (SL) for ~150 hours. HL goes deeper in content and analysis and weighs differently in exams and internal assessment. Students take three HL and three SL subjects (max four HL).

When does the IB run exams?

Two exam sessions per year: May (used by most schools in Türkiye) and November. May results are released in early July; November results in early January.

What IB score do top universities expect?

Top UK universities typically ask for 38-42; Oxbridge and LSE ask for 7s in specified HL subjects. Ivy League and US Top 20 admissions are competitive at 40+. English-medium programmes in Türkiye usually accept 30-32 minimum, with scholarship thresholds at 36-38.

IB Diploma structure and assessment

Six subjects from the IB groups, plus three core components, with both internal and external assessment.

Group 1 — Studies in Language and Literature

Native language; Literature, Lang & Lit, or Lit & Performance

Group 2 — Language Acquisition

Second language; Language B or ab initio

Group 3 — Individuals and Societies

History, Economics, Geography, Psychology, Business Management, etc.

Group 4 — Sciences

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, etc.

Group 5 — Mathematics

Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation

Group 6 — Arts (or extra Group 3/4)

Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Film, or a second Group 3/4 subject

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

·
Up to 3 bonus points (with EE)

Extended Essay (EE)

·
4,000-word independent research

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

·
Required for diploma (no points)

Each subject combines external papers with internal assessment marked by the school and externally moderated.

IB scoring at a glance

Subject grades

Each subject scored 1-7; six subjects × 7 = 42 points.

TOK + EE matrix

Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay are jointly assessed for 0-3 bonus points.

Total

Diploma is scored out of 45; the minimum pass is 24 points.

Failing conditions

An E in TOK/EE, missing CAS, three or more SL grades below 3, or two HL grades below 2 will block the diploma.

UK admissions typically map 7 to A*+ and 6 to A; in the US, HL 6-7 is often accepted as equivalent to AP 5.
